[EN] The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula is a dense region of dust and gas found within the considerably larger star forming region IC 1396 in Cepheus constellation. Designated IC 1396A, the elongated globule of dust and gas was named the Elephant’s Trunk because it resembles an elephant’s head and trunk at visible wavelengths, appearing as a dark patch with a bright winding rim. It is located at a distance of 2,400 light years from Earth. The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula is a region of star formation, with more than 250 young stars identified within and around it. Several of these stars are very young, less than 100,000 years old. There are two stars with an estimated age of a couple of million years, found in a small cavity in the head of the Elephant’s Trunk.

[NL] De Olifantenslurfnevel (IC 1396A ) is een dicht gebied van stof en gas dat wordt aangetroffen in het aanzienlijk grotere stervormingsgebied IC 1396 in het sterrenbeeld Cepheus. De Olifantenslurfnevel is een langwerpige bol van stof en gas die lijkt op het hoofd en de slurf van een olifant en die er uitziet als een donkere vlek met een heldere kronkelende rand. Het object bevindt zich op een afstand van 2.400 lichtjaar van de aarde. De Olifantenslurfnevel is een gebied waar stervorming plaats vindt en bevat meer dan 250 jonge sterren. Verschillende van deze sterren zijn erg jong, minder dan 100.000 jaar. De twee sterren in de kleine holte van de kop van de olifantenslurf worden dan weer geschat op een leeftijd van een paar miljoen jaar.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
